Diurnal auroral occurrence statistics obtained via machine vision

چکیده
Modern ground-based digital auroral All-Sky Imager (ASI) networks capture millions of images annually. Machine vision techniques are widely utilised in the retrieval of images from large data bases. Clearly, they can play an important scientific role in dealing with data from auroral ASI networks, facilitating both efficient searches and statistical studies. Furthermore, the development of automated techniques for identifying specific types of aurora opens up the potential of ASI control software that would change instrument operation in response to evolving geophysical conditions. In this paper, we describe machine vision techniques that we have developed for use on large auroral image data sets. We present the results of application of these techniques to a 350 000 image subset of the CANOPUS Gillam ASI in the years 1993–1998. In particular, we obtain occurrence statistics for auroral arcs, patches, and Omega-bands. These results agree with those of previous manual auroral surveys.

Global characteristics of Pc1 magnetic pulsations during solar cycle 23 deduced from CHAMP data
We present a global climatology of Pc1 pulsations as observed by the CHAMP satellite from 2000 to 2010. The Pc1 center frequency and bandwidth are about 1 and 0.5 Hz, respectively. The ellipticity is mostly linear with the major axis almost aligned with the magnetic zonal direction. The diurnal variation of Pc1 occurrences shows a primary maximum early in the morning and a secondary maximum dur...
متن کاملDetermining the Skeletons of the Auroras
The auroral emissions observed in the high-latitude regions encircling the magnetic poles are a key element in studying plasmaphysical processes in the near-Earth space, the magnetosphere. The Finnish Meteorological Institute operates five digital all-sky cameras, which routinely monitor the auroral emissions in Northern Finland, Sweden, and Svalbard; each camera records an image of the full sk...
متن کاملLongitudinal (UT) eect in the onset of auroral disturbances over two solar cycles as deduced from the AE-index
Statistical study on the universal time variations in the mean hourly auroral electrojet index (AEindex) has been undertaken for a 21 y period over two solar cycles (1957±1968 and 1978±1986). The analysis, applied to isolated auroral substorm onsets (inferred from rapid variations in the AE-index) and to the bulk of the AE data, indicates that the maximum in auroral activity is largely con®ned ...
متن کاملA statistical study of diurnal, seasonal and solar cycle variations of F-region and topside auroral up ̄ows observed by EISCAT
A statistical analysis of F-region and topside auroral ion up ̄ow events is presented. The study is based on observations from EISCAT Common Programmes (CP) 1 and 2 made between 1984 and 1996, and Common Programme 7 observations taken between 1990 and 1995. The occurrence frequency of ion up ̄ow events (IUEs) is examined over the altitude range 200 to 500 km, using ®eld-aligned observations from ...
متن کاملOccurrence Based Statistics in Machine Translation
As MT approaches demand longer context for better translation quality, the limitations of current language modeling techniques become explicit. The computational inability to model the likelihood of longer ngrams and the likelihood of their usage in probabilistic manner, have prevented us from exploring long ngrams in MT. In this paper, we propose and investigate a new set of features called oc...
